The Saginaw Valley Journal is a newspaper covering the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. It was founded in 2009 and is one of only a handful of for-profit campus newspapers in the entire nation.
What started out as 30 newsletters passed around to family and friends—quickly turned into a college-based media mini-empire.
In just six month’s time, The Saginaw Valley Journal surpassed the older, school-sponsored student newspaper at SVSU in circulation, revenue, and Web traffic; and it hasn’t looked back.
The Saginaw Valley Journal now consistently breaks more news than any other campus media outlet. The Journal is — without a doubt — the go-to newspaper and website for when news breaks on campus. More SVSU student leaders and administration members read The Saginaw Valley Journal than any other campus news source. In addition, The Journal has the largest print circulation on campus, its website receives more visitors than any other campus media outlet, and its social media presence is unmatched.
The Saginaw Valley Journal practices ‘digital-first journalism’ and serves over 12,000 students, staff, and faculty with news and information on the issues that are critically important to the campus community. The Journal remains the only campus news source that is editorially, financially, and legally independent of the university.
The Saginaw Valley Journal is published by the firm Sterling, Hoffman & Co., L.L.C. As a matter of principle, The Saginaw Valley Journal does not accept student or tax-payer funding.
